In fact the first translation you see is given without any hints whatsoever what the characters might mean. You just have to guess. Like you would in real life. And then find more pieces that refer to the same words or symbols, and refine your guesses, or realize that you gone down a completely wrong route. As time progresses and your list of words grows you start to see patterns and after a while it becomes easier and easier to recognize unknown words. After about 300 words I would say I have a 99% accuracy rating now. This deduction is extremely satisfying, and once you can read a word made out of a dozen characters you feel like you accomplished something real. The story also is pretty well thought out. At the start it makes little sense, and even at the end of the first walkthrough you might feel there are bits that still don't quite add up. But as you play repeatedly you gain more information and eventually the whole world and history will come together and make perfect sense. Now this game might not be for everyone- The game is slow, very slow. There is a lot of slow walking and sailing. Personally I don't mind this as there is constant banter between the main character and her sidekick robot during those long walk but some people might find this frustrating.- You will not know the full story after the first walkthrough. Or the second, or the third even. As with real archeology, there will always be unanswered questions, guessed, false premises, etc. But that is part of the game and it will encourage you to play again, try different approaches, see if the findings across multiple timelines confirm each other or not, etc.. I love this game to bits. Its an intriguing story revealed over the course of your investigation. The best bit though is the linguistic parts of the game. YOu get to decipher an entire alien language, based initially on vague hints from the game and your own intuition you can slowly build up an understanding of how the language works. As your understanding grows so too do the complexities of the words you are trying to understand. From the two or three symbols words at the start to 15 character words and perhaps more. I'm already excited to restart with a New GAme + where I get to keep my dictionary of learned words and the game starts with more complicated phrases from the very start. If you want a great blend of puzzle and narrative this is a great game to pick up.. Heaven's Vault is the only game I know that had me convinced I knew what I needed to do, without realising that noone ever told me what I was doing. I played for hours, just reacting to events in the world and revelling in the joy of discovering the in-game language.Starting with a single word, and trying to extrapolate the meaning of glyphs etched into artifacts you find on the many moons, ruins, and from traders is the most bizarrely excellent and exciting system I've played with in ages! I'm honestly sad that there are no other games quite like it.The conversations flow naturally (though only when you realise that Aliya, the main character, has preexisting character flaws that you discover over time - or "is a bit of a jerk"), and there are so many options to discover that multiple playthroughs work well. The visual style is interesting; though it was controversial when initially announced, you soon get used to it and just enjoy the world.I completed the game on PS4, and rebought on Steam to play again!. It's very good.Decoding the ancient language is a delight. The characters are well written and engaging, and I get the impression that there's more variety in them than I saw in a single playthrough. It's also a very odd game. It's not exactly that the game breaks "the rules". It's more like the game doesn't recognise that there ARE rules. In a way, it feels like it belongs to an earlier age, when new genres were being forged. I don't think this is the product of accident or naivete. It reminds me of experimental games like Trinity (1986) and Blue Ice (1996), though it's a great deal more accessible than either. It's not completely perfect.I started playing before the first patch came out, and there were plenty of quirks and janks and gremlins along the way. I gladly forgave most of them, though. The design may be bold, occasionally disconcerting and elliptical... but the heart of the game is just good, straightforward storytelling. And it does that really well.. As interesting as the worldbuilding is, this is the first game I've ever played where I've been impatient for cutscenes to end. It's not that the cutscenes are boring, but rather that the central translating mechanic is SO MUCH FUN. I'm obsessed, which makes it very easy to roleplay as Aliya, even when she's being a jerk - like her, I can't wait to get back into some ruins and get my hands on some more Ancient Language!I haven't quite gotten a handle on how the roleplaying works yet - if there's a way to tell which of the two reply options it gives you is going to be the rude one and which the nice, I haven't found it. And as much as I love the translations, the other central mechanic, of sailing on the astral rivers, isn't my favorite, so I'm excited to try the update that lets you fast travel to more locations! Searching for undiscovered sites is going to stay tedious, but that's mostly because I'm overeager for more ruins - I could wait until I find more clues to narrow the search area.Overall, the world is interesting and the main character has a lot of personality, which I respect even if I wish I could make her be a little nicer to our pet robot. Most importantly, I LOVE the translation mechanic, and I suspect that those of you who are language nerds and perfectionists will love it too.. For a game about exploration is sure loves taking away control quite a lot. It is also painfully slow in both exploring the world, dialogues, and pacing. Added to that there is the rather bad controls, which often gets in its own way. I don't know the number of times pressing Y had be instead of moving to a location, jump back to the ship and not letting me return. The translation game also has it's flaws. Quite often I have to continue building a wrong sentence until it marks enough words as wrong so that it can continue with the final guessing. The first reviews are in!: It's release day and the first reviews are in! Eurogamer has a thoughtful review, which talks about how intricate the story is - "As a player I felt both autonomous and well-cared for. I could play the game as I saw fit in any moment, but whatever I did, the overall story refused to become an ugly, artless blob formed by my actions":https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-04-16-heavens-vault-review-a-rich-web-of-possibilityOver on PC Gamer, they describe the game as "Exquisite" saying "Heaven's Vault does a beautiful job of letting you unlock a language, and thus a dialogue of sorts, with the past, via a wonderfully engaging protagonist."https://www.pcgamer.com/heavens-vault-review/TechRaptor says: "This is an absolutely beautiful game that manages to succeed at something genuinely unique and interesting. It also does something many of the best adventure games do. It makes me want to spend more time in its world, as Heaven’s Vault is well worth my time. These are characters I want to talk to, Ancient is a language I want to learn, and Heaven’s Vault is a game I want to replay."https://techraptor.net/content/heavens-vault-review. Heaven's Vault playable at MCM London Comic Con!: We're super excited to announce that the latest Heaven's Vault demo will be playable at MCM London Comic Con this year. (https://www.mcmcomiccon.com/london/)If you're there, come and try your hand at deciphering ancient inscriptions and exploring lost ruins!. The Fair Points Update: I was too nervous to read Heat Signature reviews for two weeks after launch. I was relieved to see the scores were great, and after 3.5 years of work, that was all I wanted to hear: I didn't want to know what their caveats were.Once I calmed down and read them, though, I was delighted: they were not only very positive, but they told entertaining stories and made intelligent points. And almost every critique I read I thought was a fair point. Hence this:The Fair Points Update. 5 new features and 3 new items, in direct response to review critique, designed to round the game out and make it more fun for more people. We also added a gun that fires acid money to melt the flesh from your enemies and leave only chemically bleached bone. No-one asked us for that, we just kind of did it, and now here we are. This post only explains the features themselves, read the blog version[www.pentadact.com] if you're interested in the design thinking behind it all.Fair Point:. Space Winter is back, there's a patch, and a sale!: Each winter, until the 31st of Space December, the Voidmother encroaches on this dark corner of the galaxy, and we all stay close to home and swap random objects with our Steam friends via industrial gift chutes. We also have a new patch that'll help more folks get into the Daily Challenge, and experienced Challengers have a smoother time. And we're half-price!http://store.steampowered.com/app/268130/Heat_Signature/Introducing Easy Sundays. The Space Birthday Update: Contractors: This post is about a feature of the free Space Birthday Update, out now! See this post for the details. Our philosophy with enemies in Heat Signature was to allow every combination possible, so a Glitch-Dash guard can also have Heat Sensors and can also have Shields and so on. It leads to a huge number of possible configurations, some of which have interesting consequences, but it sometimes lacks flavour.Contractors came about when trying to come up with enemies that would be a challenge even if you had the best kit in the galaxy, and we designed them with the opposite philosophy: there are just 4 types, and each one is completely different from the others. We want you to know exactly what each one does and not have to check a kit list each time. They each have a single specialty, but each one is something so formidable you'll need to rethink your usual strategies. You'll only encounter Contractors on harder missions, and only a few per ship. But when ships call in Reinforcements, it's these guys who show up on the telepad. In order of how much they should worry you:The Defender. New Patch: Version 2017.09.28.1: We've uploaded a new patch, here's what's changed: The Everything Gun is automatically unlocked for everyone who plays the game before Oct 5th, whether or not you steal it. You can still steal it from the shipment, if you haven't already, as a reliable way of obtaining it the first time. Everything Gun status reported on character select. Improved memory management. Added memory usage logging. We've also made a few changes to the compatibility-test beta that will hopefully fix Out Of Memory errors or slowdown for a few players: Textures are now loaded on-demand. Sleep Margin increased from 1ms to 10ms.You can visit the Technical Problems thread for instruction on switching to the compatibility-test beta. Thanks!Edit: fixed a typo.. The Space Birthday Update: Character Traits: This post is about a feature of the free Space Birthday Update, out now! See this post for the details.Character Traits. Two weeks to find two weapons left by two legends in love: http://store.steampowered.com/app/268130/Heat_Signature/It's on this day, the 13th of Space February for some reason, we remember the assassin Cherry Ash and her lover, muse, and arresting officer Tesh Domina. Two legends of their professions, two glittering careers brought crashing down in glorious flames when they hooked up instead of doing their jobs. Today we celebrate their professionally disastrous and ultimately fatal love, partly because it has something to teach us about the human condition, and partly because their sweet custom weapons are still knocking around here somewhere. For the next two weeks, two unique shipments are passing through the Drift. Look for a ship with a flashing gold beacon, and raid it to find either Cherry's Fatal Attraction or Tesh's Instant Connection. Each shipment will keep flying around until you steal it, or until the end of February. After that, whether you stole them or not, both items will be available to find as very rare random loot.Cherry's Fatal Attraction
